Geoarchaeological Adventures Across the US Part 2: Chaco Canyon, New Mexico
Source: http://bit.ly/136Zf7L

(image)Following on from my post a couple of weeks ago, here is another snippet of geoarchaeological observations from my recent road trip across the US. As I mentioned in the previous blog, the coast to coast trip was a great chance to observe the gradual changes in geology, vegetation and climate that happen across the continent, and how these link with the archaeological preservation. In the humid subtropical climate of the Florida pan-handle we saw a lot of water action and salt precipitation occurring at Fort Pickens, with relatively degraded brick structures that are only around 180 years………. UK GIS layers and Roman map data
Source: http://bit.ly/18ZBaUO

(image)The first map I ever made! Bedrock Geology (DiGMapGB data), with Roman roads and mines (DARMC data). Yes, it does have the wrong projection, but you have to start somewhere… For the last week or so I have been experimenting with something old and something new: GIS. On top of being generally despised, King Richard III was likely infected with foot-long parasitic worms: researchers

Not only was Richard III one of England’s most despised monarchs, but it now turns out the hunchback king was probably infected with parasitic worms that grew up to a foot in length.

Researchers who dug up Richard III’s skeleton underneath a parking lot in Leicester last year now report they discovered numerous roundworm eggs in the soil around his pelvis, where his intestines would have been. They compared that to soil samples taken close to Richard’s skull and surrounding his grave. There were no eggs near the skull and only traces of eggs in the soil near the grave.
