Missing Ancient Objects Returned to Berlin

(Egyptian objects from the 4th to 7th centuries are on display at the Bode Museum)

BERLIN — Dozens of mostly Egyptian objects from the 4th to 7th centuries AD which had been missing since the end of World War II have been unearthed and returned to a Berlin museum, officials said Monday.

The 44 pieces were identified as being part of the Bode Museum’s collection of Byzantine art after being stored for decades in two boxes at Leipzig University’s Egyptian Museum in eastern Germany.

They had been transported to the Soviet Union after World War II and were brought back to Germany in 1958 but got mixed up with objects from Leipzig and ended up there instead.

Hermann Parzinger, president of the Berlin state cultural authority, said in a written statement that the objects’ return was a “great stroke of luck”. They are on display at the Bode on Berlin’s Museum Island until March 25.

Some of the objects, which include four late antiquity clay oil lamps from North Africa, will then go into the permanent exhibition.

Mexican Collector Returns Over 200 Mayan Pieces

MEXICO CITY – A Mexican collector has handed over a batch of just over 200 artifacts – most of which date to between 700 A.D and 1,100 A.D. and show the development of Mayan cities in the country’s southeast – to the National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH.

The pieces were delivered by 76-year-old Luis Arana, whose father, Hector Arana, one of the first tourist guides in the mountainous region of Yucatan state, built the collection between 1930 and 1960, or before the founding of INAH.

Although the archaeological context in which the pieces were discovered is unknown (they were given to Hector Arana by people who found them and knew of his interest in collecting), expert Ricardo Rodolfo Antorcha said in a statement that most came from the Puuc region and belonged to the Cehpech ceramic complex.

The pieces turned over to the INAH Center in Yucatan state are believed to date to between the end of the Mayans’ Late Classic period (700-750 A.D.) and the latter stage of the Terminal Classic period (1000-1,100 A.D.).

Century-Old Time Capsule Opened:

“They found an empty hole where an artifact from the past should have been. Further investigation revealed the true location of the capsule from 1912.

After finding nothing below the 1912 stone and a capsule beneath 1913, the stones were moved to the facilities management garage. The grounds crew brought up something that raised the eyebrows of many — the 1912 stone was about 15 pounds lighter than the 1913 one.

On Feb. 9, archaeologists gathered in the garage to carefully open what remained of both the 1912 and 1913 capsules.

Western’s Outdoor Maintenance supervisor Gary Hodge and others tapped on the lighter 1912 stone. The stone sounded hollow.

After strategizing with the archaeology professors at the event, the grounds crew decided to drill and cut a grid into the 1912 slab. After drilling multiple three-quarter inch holes and sawing off chunks, the workers pried off a layer of cement from the bottom.

The crew found a tin box wrapped in plastic bags…”
