Ancient Arabic Writings Help Scientists Piece Together Past Climate:

Published: Sunday, February 26, 2012 - 23:30 in Earth & Climate

“Ancient manuscripts written by Arabic scholars can provide valuable meteorological information to help modern scientists reconstruct the climate of the past, a new study has revealed. The research, published in Weather, analyses the writings of scholars, historians and diarists in Iraq during the the Islamic Golden Age between 816-1009 AD for evidence of abnormal weather patterns. Reconstructing climates from the past provides historical comparison to modern weather events and valuable context for climate change. In the natural world trees, ice cores and coral provide evidence of past weather, but from human sources scientists are limited by the historical information available.

Until now researchers have relied on official records detailing weather patterns including air force reports during WW2 and 18th century ship’s logs. Now a team of Spanish scientists from the Universidad de Extremadura have turned to Arabic documentary sources from the 9th and 10th centuries (3rd and 4th in the Islamic calendar). The sources, from historians and political commentators of the era, focus on the social and religious events of the time, but do refer to abnormal weather events.

‘Climate information recovered from these ancient sources mainly refers to extreme events which impacted wider society such as droughts and floods,” said lead author Dr Fernando Domínguez-Castro. “However, they also document conditions which were rarely experienced in ancient Baghdad such as hailstorms, the freezing of rivers or even cases of snow’…”

Oldest Instrument is Dug-Up in Skye Cave:

archaeologicalnews:

The remains of what could be the oldest stringed instrument to be found in Europe have been discovered in a remote cave on Skye.

The burnt fragment was dug up last year during an archaeological project. It is believed to be at least 1,500 years old and pre-dates any similar item previously found on the continent.

The artefact, which resembles a bridge of an early stringed instrument, was unearthed in Skye’s High Pasture Cave – a focus of Bronze Age and Iron Age research since 1972 – and is currently being examined by experts at Historic Scotland.

Rod McCullagh, a Historic Scotland Archaeologist, said: “The cave has provided many fascinating discoveries, including a burnt fragment of a small wooden object that we have asked experts to study as it appears to be the bridge of a stringed instrument.”Until now the oldest stringed instruments found in Europe have been lyre harps dated around 600AD, which were played by Vikings throughout Scandinavia.

Cairo Airport Authorities Foil Smuggling Attempt:

archaeologicalnews:

“The Antiquities Seizures Unit (ASU) arrested a British couple trying to smuggle 19 artifacts dated to different archaeological eras at Cairo International Airport on Sunday.

Hassan Rasmi head of the ASU said that these objects include five clay and green faience ancient Egyptian Ushabti (funerary figurines) each nine centimeters tall, clay pots with human-shaped heads, Late Period lamps decorated with winged amulets and the goddess Isis, Ostraca (inscribed stone reliefs), Graeco-Roman bronze coins and Coptic manuscripts, and a Bible.

In collaboration with the customs police, the objects were confiscated and transferred to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square where it would be subjected to archaeological examination and restoration.

Minister of State for Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim told Ahram Online that among the most distinguished confiscated item is a 16th century volume of the Bible written in English. He added that when the police arrested the couple, the woman smashed and broke three of the artifacts.”

Sarcophagus with the story of Achilles and Polyxena, Roman, Ca. 250

Museo Nacional del Prado, On View in Room 72

“The story, which is highly appropriate because of its tragic character, is divided into various scenes. the front shows the armistice celebrated between Aqueans and Trojans to celebrate the marriage of Achilles to the Trojan princess, Polyxena. Agamemnon can be clearly seen in the center, between Ulysses and Paris (the latter’s head is restored). The right side shows how the treaty was broken when Achilles dies after being wounded in the heel by Paris.

Finally, the left side shows Polyxena marching to her own sacrifice in honor of the dead hero, accompanied by various Aqueans including Achilles’ son, Neoptoloemus. The front of the sarcophagus is missing, except for a few fragments in the Louvre. It represented a combat between Aqueans and Trojans.”
